These are the beginnings of a list of outdoor adventure books I’ve read and loved. They are all rated PG in my opinion, and more often than not are young adult novels. These stories do have their share of struggles and heartache but they aren’t laden with heavy or depressing topics. Most of the these books I first read as a teenager but have since re-read them as an adult and still love them just as much. I’d say they are great for any age. The books are listed in no particular order!
Where the Red Fern Grows. By Wilson Rawls. Very inspiring story, especially if you are interested in hunting and love dogs.
Island of the Blue Dolphins. By Scott O’Dell. My absolute favorite survival book, and my second favorite book of all time. Rarely are survival books about girls. This one is beautifully written and based on a true story.
White Fang. By Jack London. A young man. A pet wolf. A cabin in the Yukon Territory. On the hunt for riches during the Klondike Gold Rush.
The Call of the Wild. By Jack London. A dog’s story of survival as an Alaskan sled dog.
The Little House collection. By Laura Ingalls Wilder. Great reads for getting a picture of the pioneers’ life and what it was like to start with nothing building their homesteads.
Hunger Games Trilogy. By Suzanne Collins. You know the movies. As any reader will tell you, the books are always better! I have several friends, male and female who loved this series just as much as I did.
Sign of the Beaver. By Elizabeth George Speare. Story about a teenage boy left alone for a couple months on his family’s homestead in Maine.
I’ve linked the titles to their Amazon page. You can get them super cheap if you select the used paperbacks. Sometimes for just a penny plus the cost of shipping.
I will add more as I remember my favorites and also read new ones. What would you add to the list? Leave a comment with your recommendations!
